A Day in the Life with Daddy

June 19, 2016

It's 5:30 am and you're crying from your crib. They say kids who get enough sleep wake up happy but I don't buy it because I don't think you've ever woken up happy, at least not until we go in to get you. Daddy gets you from your crib even though he is still half asleep and takes you downstairs.

It's 6:00 am and you're sharing a bowl of lucky charms with daddy. "Sharing" is a relative term. You're eating all the marshmallows and leaving the rest for him. You'll also ask him for waffles, and banana. He'll get you both.

It's 7:00 am and you're snuggling on the couch with daddy watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse for the one millionth time. Daddy is so sick of that darn mouse, but he lets you watch it anyways, because it's your favorite. Mommy is saying goodbye and heading out the door but you barely peek your head up to wave.

It's 8:00 am and you're riding in your push car. Daddy is pushing you and walking two dogs at the same time. He's the ultimate multi-tasker, your daddy.

It's 9:00 am and you're playing dinosaurs with daddy. You cruise your dinosaurs over their playmats, seeing who can roar the loudest. Daddy always lets you win.

It's 10:00 am and daddy is pushing you on the swings at the park. "More, more, more" you say and he pushes and pushes until his arms are sore. You never tire of the swings.

It's 11:00 am and daddy is fixing you your favorite raviolis for lunch. They're his favorite too and you share a bowl before deciding you've had enough and throwing the rest to the dogs.

It's noon and daddy is rocking you and singing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." You sing along too, softly as you rest your head on his shoulder. Daddy's tucking you into bed and rubbing your back as you fall asleep, then tiptoeing out of the room to take a nap himself.

It's 2:00 pm and you're once again waking daddy with a cry. You're all done with nap and everyone in the house needs to know it. He's slowly dragging himself out of bed once again, not quite ready to wake up.

It's 3:00 pm and you're drawing chalk on the front porch with daddy, naming all the colors as mommy pulls up in the driveway. Mommy admires the drawings after giving you both a kiss.

It's 4:00 pm and daddy is figuring out how to help mommy with something for school while also keeping you entertained. You're opening and closing desk drawers, pushing buttons on the printer and grabbing at anything you can. Daddy patiently tells you no and redirects you every time.

It's 5:30 pm and you're zooming around the kitchen while daddy helps mommy make dinner. We know you won't eat the chicken we're making, but daddy will try to feed it to you anyways, he wants you to be a healthy eater and grow strong.

It's 6:30 pm and you're busy splashing daddy from the tub. He's trying to wash you as soap and water and toys are flying every which way. He's reading you your bath books and helping you learn your colors and numbers.

It's 7:00 pm and daddy is reading you How do Diggers go to Sleep. You request this book almost every night, and every night daddy honors your request. Daddy is rocking you and singing to you in the dark until you are good and sleepy, then laying you down and tucking you in with a kiss on your head. "Good night" he whispers as we quietly leave the room.

Tomorrow is another day. What a lucky little boy you are.
